Patricia Vélez Cardozo (b. Medellín, Colombia)

Patricia Vélez Cardozo is a painter and ceramicist based in Los Angeles, CA. Her work is comprised of geometric shapes and abstract compositions that are explorations into emotional states. Doors, windows, passages into minimal spaces, and symbolism are prevalent in her works.

Exploring what lies beneath the surface with gold references the richness grounded in the soil, candid strokes of color reflect a connection with the elements. Other mediums such as sand, glass, and bright paint are incorporated in her work.

Cardozo was inspired to pursue art making while taking art history courses at the University of Laussane in Switzerland. Her style was deeply influenced by the geometic patterns found in the tiles of Roman churches, which was one of the subjects of her studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. Cardozo relocated to New York in the early 60s and took courses at the School of Visual Arts. For the past 20 years, Cardozo has dedicated her time to making ceramics and acrylic paintings on canvas.

Cardozo spent 20 years employed at the Elkon and Byker galleries in New York City. The influence of the art of Agnes Martin, Brice Marden, Gordon Matta-Clark, Ralph Humphrey and Walter de Maria show through in her paintings and ceramics as an echo of her close proximity to these great artists.
